As we open ourselves up to continued empowerment and realisations about ourselves the question of our soul purpose – the reason for us being here, is bound to come up and the answer to this question, is of course, a big part of who we are and what we are doing here! Increased spiritual awareness leads us to become more altruistic and as a result we want to help others on their journey too. As part of this journey some of us will change our careers – often moving from corporate jobs into the healing or helping professions such as counselling, charity work or alternative therapies, or else by utilising our psychic and intuitive abilities to help others through readings.

The fact is, not everyone is cut out to be a therapist or a psychic reader. At birth, we are all given a set of abilities and gifts that are unique to each of us and in these we can discover our purpose. Some of us are lucky in that our soul path or purpose is revealed early on or we have families or carers who encourage us to explore our abilities. For others, part of our spiritual path actually involves discovering what our purpose is and this may involve exploring a lot of different options before we truly align with it.

But to answer the question of whether you need to be doing a spiritual job to be a spiritual person – what makes you think you are not already doing that? Let’s look at the job you have right now. No matter how simple or unaligned to a spiritual path you think your job is, you can discover a spiritual purpose behind the work you do. Let’s say at the present moment you are working as a cleaner. Try for one moment to imagine what the lives of the people whose homes or offices you clean would be like if you weren’t performing your job. The person whose house you clean might not be able to cope with their job without your support. The office would become dirty leading to problems with people’s health or the company’s performance. It’s therefore not grandiose to say you are performing an important service and one that helps people to earn their own livelihoods and makes their lives better. When you look at it that way isn’t what you are doing just as ‘spiritual’ as the counsellor or psychic?

Think for a moment about where we would be without people who do jobs we sometimes complain about. Police officer. Parking attendant. Banker. Maybe you do one of those jobs. Without the police we would have no order. Without parking attendants many people would just park selfishly, blocking the streets for everyone including emergency vehicles. Without bankers (perhaps presently the most reviled of professions!), we would have no investment, no growth and therefore no jobs for anyone. People who do these difficult jobs allow society to function and therefore all of us to continue to explore what our spiritual path is.

Finding our purpose in life is often linked to our Dharma or work. For some, the job we are already doing is the one most aligned to our soul purpose. You may really enjoy cleaning and derive immense pleasure from making people’s environments sparkle so they are a pleasure to spend time in. You may want to contribute to society’s structure by helping maintain law and order, or you may have a real interest in economics and figures or a gift for investing. If you are the proverbial ‘square peg in the square hole’ then congratulations. You have found your purpose.

If you still feel your purpose has yet to be revealed then know that the job you are doing right now is an important step on the way to uncovering it even if it doesn’t feel like it. But no matter what your job is – we’re all fabulous, vibrant, spiritual beings and one thing you can be certain of is your job is a spiritual one just as you, like everyone else on this planet, is a spiritual person. Finding your spiritual job can be as easy as looking at the one you are doing right now and by doing it, you make the world a better place in some way just by bringing to it your own uniqueness.

A new study conducted by researchers at Ohio State University shows that when we identify with fictional characters we subconsciously adopt their behaviours, thoughts, feelings and emotional responses in a phenomenon they call ‘experience taking’. According to the study which was recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: ‘When you “lose yourself” inside the world of a fictional character while reading a story, you may actually end up changing your own behaviour and thoughts to match that of the character.’

This can be good or bad news depending on what kind of books you read! It also means you can make a conscious choice to choose a book with a character which might help you in your current situation!

Interestingly enough, the researchers found that same kind of emotional identification and experience taking didn’t happen when watching characters in a film. It appears that the first person narratives in books provide us with that all-important window into the characters soul – we share in their emotional response and if they encounter set-backs on their path, these can provide us with insights on how to deal with them should we encounter similar ones. There’s also the knowledge that if these did not deter our protagonist, they won’t stop us from achieving our goal either. – reaching our goal usually requires us to think and act in a way differently than we have in the past. As Albert Einstein so aptly put it: ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.’

There’s no doubt that choosing a role model can assist us in making the changes we may need to do in order to attract what we want. We choose someone who has achieved what we want to do and then imagine how they must think and act differently to us in order to have attained this goal and then model our behaviour on theirs. This can often work very well but there can be disadvantages. For one thing – you may know of someone who has achieved what you want to – but you may not like or approve of their methods for getting it. You may choose a role model only to find they are not what they appear to be when they topple from their pedestal (a risk when we choose a celebrity as a role model), or else you cannot think of anyone who really inspires you that you want to model yourself on!

Books give us more freedom as we can create the outer edges of the charachter. It doesn’t matter what genre you enjoy reading. And your literary ‘Goal Model’ doesn’t necessarily have to be on the exact same path as you are. You might identify with a character because they have certain qualities you feel you need to adopt in order to reach your goal – self confidence, for example. Or they may have to overcome certain limitations – physical, financial, emotional – that you can identify with. You can then literally step into their shoes and in doing so their lives, their responses, the results they achieve – become yours. I would hazard a guess that books also create faster neural pathways which help dig into our charachter the qualities we seek .

We all know that by changing our behaviour and thoughts, we change our world.   Just like the saying ‘you are what you eat’ it seems we are also what we read!

Jon’s insights into how we can literally ‘craft’ our destiny and change predicted outcomes, led me to delve deeper into the concept of changing our future and also how this can empower us when it comes to manifesting our goals.

‘The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once’ – Albert Einstein.  Einstein showed us that time doesn’t actually exist. The past, present and future exist simultaneously. We have created linear time in order to make sense of everything because everything is literally happening in this very moment! To put it simply, right this second the Big Bang – the moment of creation is occurring and, if you believe the universe will end that way – the Big Crunch is also happening and everything else in-between.

Quantum physics has shown us that the mere act of observing a sub-atomic particle changes it. This knowledge has had a huge effect not only on the scientific community but also for those on a spiritual path. Of course the great spiritual masters have always taught us that we are beings of light and energy – which of course we are on a sub-atomic level. Everything in this universe therefore exists as energy and that includes our thoughts. Just as scientists have changed the behaviour of sub-atomic particles merely by observing them, so we can change or bring about outcomes merely by focussing our attention.

Think of yourself as a Quantum Creator. As a being of light what you think of as ‘reality’ is in fact a field of quantum activity that you perceive in a very limited way due to being trapped in a human body! In other words, you only see a part of the true reality just like you perceive time as being linear. Quantum physics tells us you are the creator of how you perceive this reality. When you have a goal or an intention you immediately broadcast it out into this quantum field and it immediately exists as what we would call a Quantum Probability Wave. Now we’re doing this every single second of course. The trick to manifesting what it is you want is to give it sufficient attention – just as Jon talked about altering a reading prediction by engaging in ritual, if you give a goal sufficient time, energy and expectation, you Quantum Create it as a definite thing – something that exists at a point in space and time. Of course we can say it exists from the moment you think of it – but your perception of linear time makes it look like you haven’t got it yet.

The amazing thing about what quantum physics is teaching us about the universe and therefore ourselves, is that the universe is renewed on a sub-atomic level every few seconds. The universe is engaged in a never-ending dance of creation and transformation. Sub-atomic particles are destroyed and in the moment they die they give birth to new ones. Most sub-atomic particles have a life of just a few billionths of a second. Which means that in the time you have been reading this article the universe has been totally renewed and re-created many many times.

Imagine everything being wiped clean and restored – just slightly differently, every trillionth of a second or so. Also, when a particle is created, it is instantly travelling at the speed of light (or faster if those neutrinos are anything to go by!). We are also made from the same particles which means we are also travelling at the speed of light too.

Every moment is therefore a new beginning – a fresh start in a brand new universe. The chance to change our thoughts and intentions and begin again. When we look at life this way we can see every second as an opportunity to change and use this knowledge for empowerment and to manifest our goals. So, if someone ever tells you it’s too late – quantum mechanics begs to differ. A brand new reality is created every single moment. Your power is quite literally in the now.

Tarot cards can be used to unlock insights into ourselves and others, and provide us with the ability to transform our future. What’s more we don’t need to be a tarot expert or consult a professional reader to do this. Anyone who owns a tarot deck can whether they understand all the traditional meaning of the cards or not. It’s a simple but fun technique I’ll share with you now that I call the Six Steps of Insight.

Step One: First of all – let go of all the traditional interpretations of the cards before you start this exercise. We are not going to interpret the cards but connect with them on a soul resonance level. This requires us to let go of any desire to predict outcomes or overlay the cards with what we may want to happen. If you don’t know how to interpret the cards – congratulations! You won’t be hampered by any preconceptions.

Step Two: Now lay out your entire tarot deck FACE UP in front of you. You can lay them out in any order just as they come out of the pack. You do not have to put all the major arcana or suits together. Once you have done this sit back and allow your eyes to take in your entire deck. Again, don’t think about the meaning of the cards, allow other impressions to form – the colours and the feelings the images evoke in you.

Step Three: After you have ‘sat’ with your cards for a few moments I want you to choose the six cards you are most drawn to and like. Again, for this exercise to work your choice needs to be based on your impressions of the cards, the feelings they evoke in you, the colours and images you are most drawn to and resonate with, as opposed to what you might want to happen in your life. You may want a new love to come into your life but don’t pick The Lovers or the Two of Cups just because of that. Go with your instincts.

Step Four: Now – choose the six cards you like the least! Perhaps your choice here is influenced by dark colours, images of difficulty or sleepless nights. Or you discover that some reason right now you really don’t like a card that is otherwise light, bright and positive. If that’s the case and it can be, then add it to your least liked. Remember, this is all about how you feel about the cards, not about their meaning per se.

Step Five: Arrange your six ‘likes’ in a row and your six ‘dislikes’ underneath them. Look at them closely. Do any of the cards you have selected as a ‘like’ have a clear opposite – a card in the ‘dislike’ row that evokes the opposite feeling in you to your ‘like’? If so, arrange them so one is above the other. You may find that you have unconsciously selected more than one pair of cards that represents the opposite of the other. Again, arrange them so one is above the other. Also look to see if the cards are telling a ‘story’ in some way. Is there a link you can see between them? If so, arrange them again so the story unfolds in a linear fashion.

Step Six: Finally, once again letting go of any traditional interpretations of the cards, do these cards remind you of anyone or anything that has been or is going on in your life right now? Again, this is all about your ‘gut’ reaction to the cards you have chosen and the thoughts and feelings they evoke. Perhaps you have chosen the Three of Swords and this leads you to the insight that despite the fact you are now dating, you still have some processing to do to get over your previous relationship.

Write down the cards you have chosen and any insights that come through for you about why you have chosen them and what they represent for you on an emotional and psychic level. You may find at this point that you have picked some cards that appear to have no bearing on anything that is going on for you. These can be the most interesting of all as you will have usually picked them for a reason. Again, write down what you believe the card could represent for you.

This exercise can be a powerful tool of insight and can also be incredibly useful for anyone wanting to hone their tarot skills whether you are a complete beginner or a professional reader as it enables you to link your subconscious mind to the cards and draw amazing insights from them. As time passes you may be amazed when you re-read what you wrote regarding your choices how accurate your emotional connection and interpretation was. You can literally end up being your own tarot reader!

Repeat this exercise whenever you require insight into what is happening in your life or what may be coming up. The interesting thing is that you will choose different cards every time but your interpretation of the cards is what makes this exercise such a powerful tool of insight and empowerment.
