President Barack Obama: Real Hope for the Future?
When news came of Obama’s win it was my partners birthday and, like the vast majority of the world, I shed quite a few tears of joy. To be able to witness this moment in history where the first African American president is voted in was a truly humbling moment. America in many ways has been seen to be a country that could be accused of provided lip service to the ‘American dream’ and then it goes and proves many people wrong by doing something extraordinary and showing the world it really is a country where anything is possible. So what is it all about? What will Barack Obama bring to America?

I have got a bit of a conspiracy feeling over his election. I believe that, instead of putting up a fight, the political right stood back and let Obama win. Given that the US economy is in such a mess it could be said that Obama has taken up a poison chalice. If Obama fails at the stupendously hard task of turning the economy around in his four year term, those on the right could blame it on him. If that was indeed their strategy, they could not have made a bigger mistake. One way or another Barack Obama is going to change the world – and change it for the better.
Barack is a Leo and he certainly imbues that regal Leo charm. His oratory skills come from his Mercury which is also in Leo. These two are in his 6th house – the house of work and career. His work is a vocation and his passion. He was born to lead and shine in whatever he decided to do. His Venus planet of love is in nurturing Cancer, making him very intuitive and caring. His love is very maternal and he has a great deal of sensitivity. Cancer is the parent and so the other love of his life will be his girls. He has Mars planet of war and personal power in Virgo along with Pluto in the 7th house. This will make him reluctant to start any aggression and always pay attention to the details. This position may help him sort out the mess of Iraq and handle withdrawal in a meticulous fashion, as he has stated he intends to do.
The danger of Mars close to Pluto can be sudden loss of the father (in Barack’s case he was deserted by his father when he was two) although worryingly it could also indicate the danger of unexpected violence or trauma. In Baracks case, I assume this could mean an attempted assassination or some extremist taking a pot shot. Because the two planets are in Virgo, Barack will be aware of this and should be safe as long as he always pays attention to the details of travel. If there were an assassination attempt (and the news is that the extreme right have already been plotting) it is essential that he is following his own plan and trusts his instincts. Pluto close to Mars can indicate sudden violence but also someone who is very sensitive to danger. I feel there will be one danger point around the time of inaugeration and a turning point for him next September/October.
Another thing that sticks out to me is that he has his Chiron in Pisces. This is the position of the wounded healer. He is highly evolved and senses individual and societies’ pain. He is probably the first genuine politician that we have had anywhere in the world. He truly does want to change the world and bring humanity together. Whether he can or not remains to be seen, but in his heart he is pure and is a convincing orator because he means it. This was very clearly displayed in his first speech when he was voted in where he mentioned that America would finally be ‘the United States’.
Some Astrologers have been worried about President Obama’s chart as he has Neptune, planet of illusion, square his Sun. Some astrologers have suggested that this means his public image is an illusion. I don’t feel this at all and for me it means in this case that Barack will try to be all his dreams a nd high expectations. Of course none of us can be perfect and he is likely to give himself a very hard time if he fails in any way or falls short of his expectations for himself. That can’t be a bad thing can it? Barack’s Mars also trines Saturn so he takes his responsibilities very seriously. Saturn is conjunct Jupiter so what he feels responsible for should be supported and the Gods are looking out for him. His Jupiter planet of good fortune and his wonderfully confident Mercury in Leo do square Neptune which for me means he could sometimes delude himself – not for the wrong reasons, but because he is an idealist.
I am sure President Obama will do more than his very best not only for his country but for the whole world. If Pluto does bring a message of doom and some harm does come to him the whole world will lose something unique and beautiful – a man who wants to lead for the higher good of all.
So if Barack Obama was a Greek God, which God would he be? I have plumped for Apollo, the Sun God. Leo is ruled by the Sun and Apollo is the bringer of order (Mars in Virgo), healing (Chiron in Pisces) and the bringer of truth. Apollo also represents order, harmony and reason – the very qualities that President Obama stands for. He has the ability to make us all believe in his dreams as they are our own. Let us pray that he does not fall off his pedestal but has the strength to remain true to that dream. If anyone can do it, he can.
